Some of them hire Personal Support Workers but some don’t.
PSW jobs in Toronto hospitals is considered relatively challenging to come by, partially due to the limited number of job openings.
But recently, hospitals have started to utilize PSW’s in many inpatient care areas and sometimes also provide PSW training to work in specialized inpatient units.
Some of the inpatient units where PSW’s work in a hospital are:
- Emergency,
- Rehab units,
- Gynecology,
- Neurology,
- Respirology,
- Floor and observer assignments for “close patient watch”, and
- Critical care units such as ICU and CCU (Yes PSW’s work in critical care as well!)

I’m sure if given a choice of working in a Nursing home, community, or a hospital, many of you will choose the hospital.
After all, there are many advantages of working in a hospital:
- Rewarding and satisfying to work
- Greater job stability and better benefits
- Truly a team environment as you get to work along with Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and many other specialties.
- Good salary; PSWs working in hospitals usually earn a higher salary than in Nursing homes and community settings
- Opportunity to advance your education or to become a Nurse (Some hospitals will pay for your education)
