PSW Jobs: Where to Look For Them

According to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term care (MOHLT), there are 90,000 Personal Support Workers in Ontario.

Most of them are employed and current PSW jobs are spread all across the healthcare industry.

Majority of PSW’s work in a wide variety of facility and community based setting in the cities of Toronto, Brampton and Mississauga.

Where to look for Personal Support Worker Jobs

There are many online and offline places to look for job postings.

In Hospitals and Long-Term Care Homes (Nursing Homes) jobs are usually posted as “internal postings”.

What this means is, first a job opening is offered to current employees of the healthcare institution. It is posted on the Job board on site and also on the internal website to which only current employees have access.

If no one applies or no one is deemed suitable enough for the job, it is then opened for external applicants.

With advancements in technology and ease of processing, most employers accept online applications only.

  1. I am a new graduate looking for personal support worker job, full-time or part-time position.

    • Hello Stella,
It is a bit of a challenge for new graduates to market themselves due to lack of experience however, there are still many options.
Although you might not have much experience working as a PSW but, you should still keep applying to the job postings you are interested in.
Secondly, you might want to register with Employment staffing agency in your area. They do not offer the best pay but, it will help get some experience under your belt. We can send you links to some of the employment agencies if we know which part of Ontario you are from.
If you are interested in working in a Hospital or a Long-Term care facility, it is also a good idea to start volunteering with these organizations. It will not only help you get to know the place better but also give you an extra edge if and when you apply for a Personal Support Worker job with that organization.
Another very important thing is to make sure your resume looks good.
Hope this helps and good luck with your job search.

  2. I finished my first year in the BScN program at Nipissing University. I have clinical experience in both the hospital and long-term care setting. I am having a very difficult time getting a psw job. I have applied to countless places and have gotten some interviews all to no avail. I am merely looking for experience and a job even if its only a couple hrs a week for the summer. I live nearby Lawrence and Dufferin. Thank you for your time.

    • Adam, it’s great that you’ve decided to work as a PSW while pursuing your nursing education.
As of late, many places that hire PSWs require you to have a Personal Support Worker diploma from a recognised college in Ontario. Having said that, you may already have the necessary skills and knowledge to work as a PSW.
Many nursing schools do provide a letter or some sort of certificate indicating what ever studies you have completed and the skills you have learnt. More times than often, places that hire PSWs will accept that.
      Hope this is helpful.
Do keep us updated on this.
      All the best!
